PONTIANAK. Selama lima hari, 19 hingga 23 April 2026, delegasi International Cooperative Alliance Asia and Pacific (ICA-AP) bersama Institute for the Development of Agricultural Cooperation in Asia (IDACA) Jepang menyambangi Pontianak dan sejumlah titik di Kalimantan Barat.

Dialog berlangsung terbuka.
PONTIANAK. For five days, 19 to 23 April 2026, the delegation of the International Cooperative Alliance Asia and Pacific (ICA-AP) together with the Institute for the Development of Agricultural Cooperation in Asia (IDACA) Japan visited Pontianak and several points in West Kalimantan. This was not merely a formal visit. It became a kind of working pilgrimage, tracing the footprint of the ICA-MAFF training programme that has run for more than five years, while reading the pulse of the cooperative movement at the grassroots.
Guided by inKUR as local host, the delegation walked through three different terrains. There was a farmer-based production house, a credit union rooted in a border community, and one of the largest credit unions in Indonesia. All for one same question: how do cooperatives in Indonesia, particularly in West Kalimantan, translate movement values into real life?
Day One: A Reunion with ICA-MAFF Alumni
The first active day of the visit fell on 21 April. The delegation held a follow-up with alumni of the ICA-MAFF programme from the 2020 to 2025 cohorts, a training long known as one of the “field schools” for young cooperative leaders in the Asia Pacific.

The meeting was not merely a reunion. It was an honest evaluation. After the training ends, what truly grows in the field? The alumni shared stories about initiatives that worked, blockages they still face, and ideas still searching for a form.
After that, the group travelled to Kalara Borneo, a bean-to-bar chocolate production house founded by one of the ICA-MAFF alumni. There, the delegation saw for themselves how knowledge brought home from the training turns into a cocoa supply chain that links smallholder farmers with a premium market.

From beans picked in farmers’ gardens, fermented, dried, and moulded into chocolate bars, all under one roof. Kalara Borneo is proof that a training can grow into a real business, not only a certificate on the wall.
Days Two and Three: Staying in Balai Karangan
From Pontianak, the delegation travelled overland to Balai Karangan, Sanggau Regency, to stay in the heart of the CU Mura Kopa community. For two days, 22 and 23 April, ICA-IDACA held long dialogues with the board and members about how the credit union movement has grown in Indonesia, and why in West Kalimantan a CU is not merely a financial institution but also the social backbone of its community.

Not stopping at the meeting room, the delegation went down to the members’ fields. They met farmers directly and saw how the savings, loans, and accompaniment of CU Mura Kopa intertwine with daily life: cocoa gardens, peanut plots, chilli fields, pepper gardens, and more.

For the Japanese delegation, familiar with national-scale agricultural cooperatives, this encounter gave a new perspective on how a small scale can become a great strength when bound by trust.
The Final Day: A Dialogue at Pancur Kasih
The climax of the visit took place in Pontianak, where the delegation was warmly welcomed by CU Pancur Kasih, one of the largest credit unions in Indonesia. The dialogue was open. They touched on the long history of the West Kalimantan CU movement, the challenges of leadership regeneration, and how CU Pancur Kasih preserves the soul of its movement amid the demands of professionalisation.
For ICA-AP and IDACA, this meeting became an important reference. For Pancur Kasih, it was a moment to share and to rethink its place on the map of the Asia Pacific cooperative movement.
More than a Visit
These five days affirmed one thing. The Indonesian cooperative movement, especially in West Kalimantan, does not live in a vacuum. It is connected to a global network, from Japan to the Asia Pacific, and is being watched by those who believe that a cooperative is not merely a form of business, but a way of life.
For inKUR, which served as host and bridge throughout this visit, the ICA-IDACA agenda is a reminder. A cooperative federation is not enough if it only manages membership administration. It must actively connect the Real Sector Cooperatives and Credit Unions under its wing with the currents of global learning, so that knowledge from abroad does not stop in seminar rooms but lands in farmers’ gardens, in cooperative shops, and on the dining tables of members.
